Out Magazine and The Advocate In The Closet?

March 23, 2011

Out & The Advocate In The Closet

Today, as happens once a month I received my subscription to Out Magazine and The Advocate.  Both are fine magazines in their own right.  As I was unwrapping my newest parcel, my husband commented on the solid grey plastic bag they arrived in.

These magazines celebrate LGBT culture and politics.  It’s ironic to me that these magazines celebrate our culture, heritage, struggles and successes yet come disguised in a solid grey wrapper so that handlers don’t know what’s inside.  Why would magazines who advocate and celebrate the PRIDE of our community come disguised?  Are they embarrased about what they celebrate? Are they trying to be discrete so carriers won’t know the recipient is gay or is it they don’t think they’re ‘family friendly’?

In any of the above cases, I take issue with their packaging.  I firmly believe that the best and most effective way  LGBT citizens gain acceptance and make advances is by NOT hiding who we are and what we’re about.

I’ve posted before that “Being apart of a silent majority of LGBT is no longer acceptable”. Use your voice, your words, your economic power and take ACTION!”  This is simply one more way to be proud of who we are and that our magazines are no different than Men’s Health, Ladies Home Journal, or any other  magazine (pornography not included).

A few months ago, the LGBT community was in an outrage because Harps, small Arkansas grocery store covered an Us Weekly magazine that featured Elton, spouse and new baby on the cover with a ‘family shield…to protect young Harps shoppers’ blocker.  How is a grey wrapper of two of the most well known LGBT magazines any different?  What’s worse, this wasn’t a single store manager’s decision to shelter the public, this is the magazines itself.

It is time for Out Magazine and The Advocate to come out of the closet, be who you’re going to be, celebrate the diversity that you bring to my door step monthly and be PROUD!  Change the wrapper to clear.. or better yet, striped in the Gay Pride Flag colors. Step out of the shadow and stop being part of a ‘silent majority’.  CELEBRATE YOUR DIVERSITY!

Thanks for the comments. I completely agree. Thanks for your Victoria tip, and thanks for supporting LGBT Human Rights!

I was thinking of the US Weekly fiasco as I read your post, too – and I wholeheartedly agre that the LGBT community must take action! I don’t know if OUT Magazine paid a third party company to send out their magazines or not, but they should be aware of the message it sends and correct it if they’re going to walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

There are attacks by foolish, ignorant people every day (Have you seen the clip where Victoria Jackson condemns two gay characters on Glee kissing because of the Bible? http://perezhilton.com/2011-03-22-victoria-jackson-attacks-gay-community-glee-cnn-again). People need to stand up against these attacks, or they’ll continue and get louder. I’m not an LBGT but I’m a huge ally, and I think (hope) together we can make a difference over time.
