The Chelsea of the South: 5 Up and Coming Gay Communities
The South rises again! Although probably not in the way that neo-Confederacy supporters intended. The Southeastern United States is becoming a popular destination for LGBT and even more so for LGBT parents. According to the most recent census data Jacksonville, FL has one of the largest gay parent populations.
Recent data from the Census Bureau rebels against stereotypes that the majority of the gay population resides in metropolises like New York and San Francisco—in fact, you can nix the northeast and the west coast in general. It turns out the South is where it’s at, according to Wednesday’s article from The New York Times, which revealed Jacksonville, Florida, to be among the cities with the largest number of gay parents. The data released proves that same-sex couples raising children is more common in the South than any other U.S. region.
Surely, somewhere down there, there are some budding communities poised to give New York’s Chelsea a run for its money. Here’s a look at some up-and-coming, and some already flourishing, gayborhoods.
