More LGBT Murders in Honduras

January 15, 2011

Hate crimes targeting LGBT Hondurans has become an all to familiar sight.  Key Honduran LGBT activists and every day citizens are being murdered simply for the fact that they look or love differently than the majority population.  Over 30 people have been murdered in the last year and a half.  What is the Honduran government doing about this?  NOTHING.  The Honduran government is a founding member of the United Nations and a key Central American influence.  Where is the international support for the LGBT Hondurans?  Where’s the UN and their protections for LGBT citizens?  Where’s the US Government?  One of the key aims of the US Governments cooperation with the Honduran government is human rights.

The US purchases 60% of ALL Honduran exports and and the US is responsible for 50% of the imports into Honduras.  The United States has the abilityto criple the Honduran government, military, and economy if Honduras doesn’t fix its human rights issues.  Americans- realize that your government is turning a blind eye towards the murder of innocent LGBT people in Honduras and isn’t going to let it get in the way of doing business with Honduras.

Gay Murders in Honduras

Only hours after LGBT Asylum News released Monday’s Action Alert calling for Honduran authorities to respond to the recent murders of three travesti women and to be held accountable for the 31 deaths of LGBTI people in Honduras in the last year and a half, civil society learned of two more individuals found murdered in Comayagüela City. Local media reports that on January 7, 2011, two individuals were found together, dead in front of a pharmacy between the Third and Fourth Avenue of Comayagüela City: an unidentified man of approximately 25-30 years and a travesti woman known as Genesis, who was about 23-27 years old.

According to media report, the deaths occurred between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm in a different location, and that the bodies were left by the pharmacy, to be found at 9:00 pm. A police report states that the cause of death in both cases was asphyxiation by strangulation. One newspaper reported that the police are on the trail of the perpetrators, who immediately fled the scene of the crime.
