North Carolina Catholic Bishops: Stop Anti-Bully Bill from Protecting Children Because It Might Mandate Gay Marriage!

December 19, 2010

No Bullying

It doesn’t matter if this bill protects children, it’s more important to stop gay marriage… Implies Catholic Bishops in North Carolina.

A bill that would mandate local school systems in North Carolina to prevent harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity has been passed in that states Senate.

Supporters of the School Violence Prevention Act, had considered Senate passage of the bill the greatest obstacle in front of them and saw the 26-22 vote by North Carolina Senators as a major victory. The bill now goes to the House, which passed similar legislation in the last General Assembly session.

Michael Burbidge, Bishop of the Raleigh diocese and Peter Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte had opposed the bill and had said, “the law would used as part of a lawsuit to persuade a judge or court to mandate same-sex marriage” in letters they sent out to parishioners.

The anti-gay Family Policy Council of North Carolina had issued similar alerts.
