Nevermind the $2 billion dollar NC budget shortfall- Today Republican and Democrat representatives will join ‘civic groups’ in condemning gay marriage and proposing an amendment against it in the State constitution.

Senator Jim Forrester (R-Gaston), Representatives David Lewis (R-Harnett), James Crawford (D-Granville), Dewey Hill (D-Brunswick), and Pearl Burris-Floyd (R-Gaston, Cleveland) will join various religious and civic groups for a news conference at the Legislature on Tuesday.

North Carolina already has laws on the books that make gay marriage illegal, but in a news release sent out to the media Monday, the group said it is the only southern U.S. state that has not banned gay marriage with an amendment to the state constitution.

“Activist courts in Massachusetts, Connecticut and California (prior to the passage of Proposition 8 in November 2008) have overturned their state’s marriage laws and redefined marriage to include same-sex couples. It is only a matter of time before homosexual couples who reside in North Carolina obtain a marriage license in one or more of those states and file a lawsuit asking a judge to redefine our state’s marriage laws to include same-sex relationships,” read the release.
