Gay and Homeless…Christmas isn’t always Merry for Everyone

December 24, 2011 Comments off

There are over 1.7 million homeless youth in America.  Nationally, an average of 6% identify themselves as LGBT and 25% or more trade sex for food.  Below is a story following two LGBT youths, who cling to each other for protection, comfort, support and the need to be loved.  They sell sex for food, alcohol and drugs to escape reality.   Its a tragically all to common story occuring in many towns and cities across America.  It’s up to US to make a difference, to put your money where your mouth is and do something.   Donate time, money or resources.  Help a throwaway kid in need… Not because it’s Christmas, but because it’s the right thing to do, any time of year.

Every year, hundreds of gay youths end up on the streets of L.A. County, where they make up a disproportionate share of the people under 25 who are homeless. ‘They haven’t been on the streets for years and years,’ an advocate says, ‘so they don’t look bad.’

AJ, 23, and his boyfriend, Alex, 21, hide their blankets and duffel bags in bushes. They shower every morning at a drop-in center and pick out outfits from a closet full of used yet youthful attire.

“If I could be invisible, I would,” AJ said. “I feel ashamed to admit that I’m homeless.”

Every year, hundreds of gay youths end up alone on the streets of Los Angeles County, where they make up a disproportionate share of the at least 4,200 people under 25 who are homeless on any given day.

A recent study found that 40% of the homeless youths in Hollywood, a gathering spot for these young people, identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or unsure of their sexual orientation. Five percent say they are transgender.

But it is a largely hidden population, said Simon Costello, who manages the drop-in center frequented by AJ and Alex.

In our Great Steate of Utah, , Volunteers of America surveyed 131 Utah youth in 2008 and 2009. Here are some of the facts:

  • 11 percent of youth said they were younger than 18
  • 42 percent of youth said they were not heterosexual.
  • 49 percent of youth said they had quit school before 12th grade.
  • 28 percent of youth said they tried to commit suicide three times or more.

Millions expected to dress in purple, in person and online, for Spirit Day

Millions of people will dress in purple on Thursday — both in person and online — to mark the second annual Spirit Day, a day demonstrate support for LGBT youth and to speak out against bullying.

Spirit Day was first occurred in October 2010 following the deaths of numerous young LGBTQ people, who committed suicide after enduring years of anti-gay bullying. In response Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan campaigned on social media websites, encouraging people to wear purple on Oct. 20 to demonstrate support for LGBT young people who are victims of bullying.

The color purple was chosen because it symbolizes “spirit” on the Rainbow Flag.

Ben Cohen

Ben Cohen is launching his ‘Acceptance Tour 2011′ aimed at increasing awareness for LGBT human rights and youth bullying.  How is it The States gets asshole athletes like Kobe Bryant, and the UK gets a great man like Ben Cohen?  Come on America- Man up and be a Ben Cohen!

English rugby star Ben Cohen – a straight ally who is a staunch supporter of LGBT equality – condemned Bryant’s remarks.

“It is disappointing to see this.  As a professional athlete and rugby World Cup champion, I understand the heat and passion of competition at the highest levels.  But we must all remember that strong bodies must be balanced with strong characters, and work toward that end. Our positions as role models demand it.”

Cohen is coming to the US next month to launch his “Acceptance Tour 2011,” aimed at raising awareness around LGBT equality and, in particular, youth bullying.  HRC will be hosting an event for Ben during his stop in Washington DC.

Athletes looking to advocate for equality also can get involved through HRC’s Athletes for Equality program. The initiative allows athletes to fundraise for equality through participation in sporting events.

Another victory for equality and fair treatment!

Recently, Minnesota’s largest school district was beset by tragedy.

A string of student suicides – some likely related to anti-gay bullying, according to community advocates – had rocked the Anoka-Hennepin School District. When several other student suicides made headlines across the country in September, it only underscored the urgent need to address the rampant anti-gay bullying and prejudice in our schools.

Inaction or denial would only invite more tragedy.

An SPLC lawsuit has protected the rights of two lesbian students in Minnesota’s Anoka-Hennepin School District. Desiree’s and Sarah’s right to participate as a couple in their school’s Royal Court procession was restored after the school altered the event to keep them from walking as a couple. The school district has been beset by a string of suicides—including by several LGBT students who suffered harassment from their fellow students. The case is part of SPLC’s ongoing work in the district to address anti-LGBT bias.

Alyssa Veil, of Eden Prairie MN grew tired of hearing anti-gay slurs and homophobic language.  So much so, she delivered an empassioned spead in December and how hateful words can kill.  Her speech earned her the National Youth Award at the National Conference of LGBT Equality earlier this month.  Congratulations Alyssa for doing what so many are scared to do… Standing Up for what you believe in!

For Alyssa Veil, it was a painful journey, listening to classmates’ anti-gay slurs as she was coming to realize she was “different” during her freshman year at the Blake School in Minneapolis. She became depressed and thought of suicide.

But after two years in a school movement to discourage classmates from using homophobic language, Veil delivered an impassioned speech in December, telling her classmates about her newfound strength and how hateful words can lead lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender teens to kill themselves.

In a triumphant turnaround, the 17-year-old senior from Eden Prairie will receive the annual national youth award of the National Conference of LGBT Equality Sunday at the Minneapolis Hilton. It’s a gathering of more than 2,500 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists, the largest such conference in the United States.

Another tragic reminder that taunts and bullying have real life-threatening consequences.  Kameron Jacobsen from New York reportedly took his own life because he was taunted and bullied on Facebook about his perceived sexual orientation.  May God rest is soul.

Kameron Jacobsen, a 14-year-old from Orange County, New York, took his own life because of Facebook taunts about his perceived sexual orientation, according to sources.

Fox 5 News reports on the loss of Jacobsen, a freshman at Monroe Woodbury High School in the northern edges of the New York metropolitan area. His death follows another suicide of a junior on the football team less than two weeks ago.

Lance

Another precious life was taken in a desperate attempt to find peace from hatred and bullying. Lance Lundsten, a victim of cruel bullying could find no escape from his predatory peers and ended his life.  He was laid to rest on Tuesday.  God rest his soul.

MILTONA, Minn. – The news of a high school student’s death and rumored suicide began circling social networking sites Monday morning, after the news began spreading that 18-year-old Jefferson High School student Lance Lundsten had died over the weekend.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call at the Lundsten’s residence in Miltona.

When officers arrived, they discovered 18-year-old Lance Lundsten needing emergency medical care. Lundsten was transported to the Douglas County Hospital where he later died.

According to his Facebook page, Lundsten was openly gay. On a Facebook memorial page in Lundsten’s honor, friends said  that Lundsten had been bullied at school for his sexual orientation. Some students who knew Lundsten believed the bullying may have led to his death.

Ol' Crazy Pat

Pat Robertson recently sat down and talked with God (or so he says) and God gave him a laundry list for 2011. Among them, Pat said that “the ACLU will be needed as never before”… oh wait, strike that… Every time I watch this video around (1:35) where Pat misspeaks Gods word (is that blaspheme?) I have to giggle. Have a look. OH, by the way, incase you were worried, God specifically said that CBN would do very well financially.  I bet Pat was relieved of that!

Interview with Daniel Hernandez: American Hero

Gifford

Gabrielle Giffords new intern Daniel Hernandez used his high school medical training to help save her life.  Daniel heard the shots and rushed to fallen victims checking for pulses.  He worked his way to Rep. Giffords and held her in a position and tended her wounds until medical professionals arrived.  President Obama referred to Hernandez as an American Hero in his speech earlier this evening.  Right wing Republicans and Tea Party members have come under scrutiny for their use of militant and violence toned speech resulting in international outcry and a call for civility in politics and American culture.  Interestingly a brave and heroic gay person like Hernandez can’t openly serve in the military (quite yet!).

Notably, Hernandez is gay.  I guess if Brian Fischer had his way and exported the gay, Giffords wouldn’t have survived.

Seth Walsh’s Brother Shawn Speaks Out

Seth Walsh

I’m standing behind my declaration that Nate Berkus hosts a terrible, sometimes unwatchable talk show, but this week he did something just terrific. He invited Wendy and Shawn Walsh, mother and brother to dead gay teen Seth Walsh, to tell the story of what happens when kids are bullied: they die.Wendy has already cemented herself as a hero in this space, becoming one of a growing number of mothers using their personal tragedies to reach other parents. And, hopefully, school administrators. In Seth’s suicide note, which he left before hanging himself from a tree in September (which would land him on life support for 10 days before he ultimately passed), he asks his mother to “make the school feel like shit for bringing you this sorrow.” She’s been on a mission to do exactly that, even managing to get the Department of Education to investigate the Tehachapi Unified School District in California for turning a blind eye to Seth’s torment.

But it’s Seth’s brother Shawn, at just 11-years-old, who stands out as a remarkable human being. He tells Berkus that he knew of Seth’s bullying, and says he encouraged Seth to tell his mother, but Seth feared it would only make his classmates’ attacks even worse. “I want people to remember that bullying isn’t okay,” says Shawn,

“because one word can make them have suicidal thoughts.”

Utah Teens Organize GSA’s in the Face of Adversity

Gay Pride

The St. George teens who launched Washington County’s first gay-straight alliance clubs this fall have caught the attention of the New York Times.

With a little nudge from the American Civil Liberties Union, GSAs were approved at Dixie, Snow Canyon, Pine View and Desert Hills high schools last spring. The Desert Hills club is the only one that has not been active this year. The number of GSAs in Utah has nearly tripled this year.

Times reporter Erik Eckholm describes the approval of the clubs as a “turning point” in “isolated” St. George. (What kind of descriptor would he use for Boulder, Hanksville or Fort Duchesne?)

Eckholm also profiles Jason Osmanski, president of the Snow Canyon GSA. Osmanski was one of several LGBT teens who shared his coming-out story for a Salt Lake Tribune story about the experiences of gay and transgender youths in Utah.

Once fearful of sharing his gay identity with friends and family, Osmanski now helps to create a safe place for other LGBT teens at his school.

“I definitely see a positive impact on the school,” Osmanski told me in an interview last month. “I know of a couple students who have recently come out because this club is here and this club provided help and resources for them to be able to come out safely…”

15y.o. GLUAD Founder: Stop Bullying or I’ll Sue!

Caleb Laieski

Gay teen activist Caleb Laieski has notified officials at every school in Arizona that they must put a stop to bullying, or else he plans to file a lawsuit.

The Arizona Republic reports that the Phoenix-area teen e-mailed a letter to more than 5,000 school administrators and elected officials in early December.

“The letters warn school officials that they must institute policies specifically prohibiting gay harassment by students, teachers and administrators,” reports the Republic. “Schools that fail to stop bullying will encounter ‘legal ramifications.’”

Laieski, 15, founded Gays and Lesbians United Against Discrimination two years ago.
