Idaho Legislators: We Will NOT Protect LGBTQ Citizens from Discrimination

Stop LGBTQ Discrimination

Post-it(r) notes are a sticky subject at the Idaho capital.  Members of a group called “Add the Words” was halted by state troopers while placing post-it notes on the glass state capital doors.  Their message?  Add the words “sexual orientation and gender identity” to the Idaho Human Rights Bill.  Since October Idahoans have been mailing and emailing messages asking lawmakers to give legislation protecting the   LGBTQIA population from discrimination a hearing and pass the legislation.

While efforts have been going on since October to have a Human Rights Bill be heard by the House State Affairs Committee legislators were stunned and shocked when the “Add the Words” campaign showed up on their marble door step.  In Idaho, the House State Affairs Committee refused to give the Human Rights Bill a hearing for the fifth year in a row.  Sounds like they’re taking a page out of the Utah LDS Legislator handbook.

[Cody Hafner]  invites the public to post their own sticky notes or if you can’t make it to Boise you can send your request to your lawmakers to amend the Human Rights Bill by submitting it to the Add The Words, Idaho website at www.addthewords.org.There will be an Add the Words, Idaho fundraising party this Thursday, January 12th, from 5:30-8:30 PM at the Beside Bardenay on the Basque Block in Downtown Boise. It will be hosted by more than 30 human rights leaders from across the state. Cost is a $10.00 to $100.00 donation at the door. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION. If you can not attend, you can send a donation to: Add the Words PAC Box 2661 Boise, ID 83701.

Utah Elects First Openly Gay Man To Statewide Office

Salt Lake City, Utah – BREAKING: Moments ago, Jim Dabakis became the first openly gay man to be elected to a statewide office in Utah. He is also among the first openly gay Democratic State Party Chairs nationwide.

Jim Dabakis, Utah’s new Democratic State Party Chair

Utah has seen two openly-gay Representatives in the State House. It has also seen an openly gay State Senator. But this is the first time an openly-LGBT person has been elected to an office by voters statewide, and it comes just 3 years after Prop 8.

“It’s an honor and a thrill [to be elected Chairman of the State Democratic Party,” says Dabakis.

From the beginning of his campaign 5 months ago, Dabakis made it clear that he did not think his sexual orientation should be an issue in the race.

“I don’t see it as a relevant factor,” he says. “I am here to do a job and do it the best I can whether I’m gay, straight, black, white or purple.”

Jim is the original co-founder of both the Utah Pride Center as well as the political advocacy group Equality Utah, and has built up a large following after his negotiations with the Mormon Church ended with them endorsing Salt Lake City’s Non-Discrimination Ordinances.

Stopping the Meddling Mormons

Latter-day Saints believe in the resurrected J...

I recently read an article on a blog (Two Gay Bullies) who have the same disdane for political correctness as I do.  The story focused primarily on the impact the Jewish community attempted to have on the recent passage of the NY Gay Marriage law.  In the article though, I found a wonderful section dedicated to our local UT villians, the Mormons.  Around these parts, we call them LDS (Latter Day Saints) but that term has never really stuck outside of Zion.  The rest of the country still knows them from the fuzzy glowing commercials they run during news casts… The Mormons.  I chose this section because of it’s local based content and the writers misunderstanding of the Mormons wield their influence.  The writer felt that the Mormon’s didn’t have much to do with the whole NY Gay marriage amendment because there aren’t allot of Mormons in NY.  It’s an understandable misconception, but untrue none the less.

As far as religious entities go, the LDS are pretty slick.  They don’t run around preaching from the pulpits, selling their versions of a Baptist fire and brimstone sermon, nor do they send Rabi’s into the streets to protest.

The Mormon’s have become far more sophisticated than that.  What they prefer to do, is find a good Mormon boy with a beef that wants to start his own organization, and then they help fund it!  They work their magic in groups like Evergreen International (Mormon faith-based ex-gay therapy), The Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage.  Why do you think NOM resists providing the government who their donors are?  The Mormons (and the Catholics) don’t want that kind of politically incorrect exposure.

So on the 24th of July when NOM takes to the streets protesting Gay Marriage (by the way, July 24th is a Mormon holiday celebrating their entry into the promised land…Utah), and announces a 2 million dollar spend to oust legislators who voted for Gay marriage, don’t think for one minute that it’s not the Mormon’s meddling in NY affairs like they did in California and Hawaii.  They’re just far more passive-aggressive about it (a skill well and alive in the Great State of Utah).

I really like how the homosexuals of California handled their Prop H8 defeat. Blacklisting their (mostly Mormon and Catholic) opponents guarantees that anyone who disagrees with us will think twice in the future about voting, speaking, or donating money. Blacklisting used to be a bad thing, back when the Hollywood studios used it against the Stalinist Left for about fifteen minutes during the McCarthyite 1950′s. I know it was bad because I’ve seen about sixteen movies and four PBS documentaries about it. But those were just utopian visionaries who wanted to bring the oppressive Soviet system to America, so let’s not compare them to the moral monsters who object to redefining marriage.

That’s why I was thrilled to discover a website pop up after Prop H8 called stopthemormons.[com]. Click on the site on my blog roll. As the bloggers explain in their FAQ, “Stop the Mormons” is not a bigoted, anti-Mormon site because Mormons really do deserve all the hate they get. Personally, I’ve never met a Mormon, but I kind of agree.

Former LDS Man Claims Evergreen International is a Suicide Mill for Gays

Evergreen International, a separate but closely tied ‘therapy’ center with the Mormon Church is located in Salt Lake City, UT.  They’re well known for assisting LDS members with what the Mormon‘s term ‘same sex attraction‘ a way to correct their disorder.  The effects of this intensive therapy (which often includes shock therapy) can be detrimental if not life threatening for many who undergo this draconian torture.

Utah’s Closeted Workers…Turning the Gay Rights Clock back 20 Years

The Human Rights Campaign

Although Salt Lake City has developed a more bohemian reputation than the rest of the state, coming out at work still seems completely unapproachable for some residents. Despite the admonition from Harvey Milk, Sarah Jackson (name has been changed), a 35-year-old Salt Lake City resident, said she would lose her job and her livelihood if she were to tell her coworkers that she is a lesbian, and so would her girlfriend of nearly five years.

“We work together at an accounting firm,” Jackson said. “We met at work, developed a friendship and that eventually morphed into a romantic relationship.”

…..

The firm is a small company and is owned by two business partners who are members of the Mormon Church.

“I just know that we would run into problems if we come out,” Jackson said. “They might not say we were being fired for being gay, but they would find other ways to let us go.”

Wow… I feel sorry for these people.  Not only are their lives more difficult because they ‘have’ to be in the closet, but they’ve made the lives of every LGBT Utah citizen and every LGBT child who is bullied that much more difficult!  Thank you for setting the LGBT movement back 20 years!

These people should be ashamed of themselves.  Putting the risk of losing their jobs above their self esteem, above who they are and what they SHOULD stand for is appalling.  As adult LGBT people it’s our responsibility to speak through our actions!

How can you be a model for younger people that it’s OK to be LGBT, to be who you are, and that you should stay in the fight to be first class citizens if you can’t even tell your employer.

How can you sit back and let others do the work of advancing our rights while hiding in the closet.  If you want to one day be able to marry your partner in Utah, to have equal employment and housing opportunities and equal civil rights it’s up to EVERY individual LGBT citizen to pick up that torch and carry it, regardless of the personal burden you endure.  We will NEVER gain equality if we hide in the closet and hope that someone ELSE works in our best interests.

It’s time these people take responsibility and stand up, stand proud and stand out!  Stop hiding among your straight peers, within your families and among your coworkers.

Being a part of a silent majority of LGBT is no longer acceptable.  Use your voice, your words, your economic power and take ACTION!

  • Don’t shop at businesses who further the anti-gay discriminatory agenda
  • Vote against politicians who continue to stifle equality legislation- LGBT Rights are Human Rights!
  • Attend rallies & protests to further the LGBT community causes-Speak Out!
  • Come OUT to your family, your friends, your coworkers and your employers.  Visibility is political power!
  • Volunteer and donate locally!

Take personal action for those who fought and died for who they were, do it for those children who took their own lives because of bullying or being ashamed of who they are.  Take action for future generations so that they will not endure what we’ve endured. Take action for yourself… be a better person, server a higher human cause!

“Our invisibility is the essence of our oppression. And until we eliminate that invisibility, people are going to be able to perpetuate the lies and myths about gay people.”Jean O’Leary

Is America Ready for a Utah Mormon Republican Pro-Gay Civil Union Candidate?

Jon Huntsman, former Utah Governor and multi-billionaire is not only seeking the Republican nomination for President, but quite possibly, endorsement from the LGBT community.

Just like cavemen, Jon and the Republican party are trying to evolve (well, whenever it’s politically advantageous to do so…).

[Jon]Huntsman has voiced his support for civil unions and other equality measures such as non-discrimination protections for members of the LGBT community. However, he has not gone so far as to endorse full marriage equality and he supported a 2004 measure that added an amendment to the Utah constitution banning same-sex marriages.

“I am where I am on civil unions. Some will like it. Some will not … We have not done an adequate job in terms of equality and fairness where it comes to reciprocal beneficiary rights,” Huntsman told talk-show host Sean Hannity.

…..

As public opinion sways toward supporting pro-LGBT legislation, more and more Republicans are coming out in support of civil unions, non-discrimination laws and a more equal taxing structure, Clarke Cooper, the executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, said.

via Huntsman seeks support from queer groups | QSaltLake – Utah’s Gay and Lesbian News and Entertainment Magazine.

Is America’s LGBT community ready to throw it’s weight behind a Mormon Republican whose ideals are ‘evolving’? And should we be?

In the Great State of Utah where morality is issued from a small one block section in the center of downtown Salt Lake City, Jon Huntsman was a moderate light at the end of a very dark tunnel for the LGBT community.  He supported fair-mindedness. A virtue often unavailable in an extremist political and religious culture that permeates the local Utah mentality.

As a multi-billionaire Governor in a small state, Huntsman never did enough to advance the human rights of the LGBT community.  He may have provided fair-minded rhetoric when politically advantageous, but he never put those dollars of his to work.  There’s no LGBT Huntsman Center, or Huntsman Act for non-discrimination or marriage equality.  This is a man who clearly had the political and financial clout to change the course of equal rights in this state, yet NEVER put his money where his mouth is…

As you begin forming opinions about candidates for President of this great country.  It’s important to remember that we’re not a democracy. We’re a Republic.  As such, you don’t vote for a man, you vote for a party.  Put your vote and your dollars to a party who represents your rights and the rights of other minorities and second-class citizens.

Unlike Jon Huntsman, most of us can’t afford to be a Republican.  Unless of course, you don’t want equal rights, first class citizenry or the right to employment and housing.  Think about that, before you ‘evolve’…

I was extremely pleased today when I received an email from Marian and Julie (co-Pastors) of the Cathedral of Hope today.  They’ve announced they will be opening a church here in SLC.  The Christian-faith based church is open to all and in the spirit of the UCC accepts people for who they are and the journey they’re on with God.  It’s great to have a truly Christian church that’s loving and accepting of all and following Christ’s example.  Welcome to Utah… I’m sure it’s going to be an interesting ride!

The Cathedral of Hope, the largest Christian congregation that has a primary outreach to the LGBT community in the world, will soon be opening a church in Salt Lake City.

Soon-to-be graduates from the Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., will be moving to Salt Lake City in May to help start the new the church. The Cathedral of Hope is affiliated with the Church of Christ and is one of the most progressive Christian congregations in the world.

The LGBT community is always welcome and no one will pressure gay people to change who they are, said Pastor Julie Watson, who along with her life and business partner, Marian Edmonds, will be heading out the church organization.

“We take the Bible very seriously, but we don’t take it literally,” Watson said.

“So many of the LGBTQ folks I talked to believe the lie that God doesn’t love them,” Watson said. “Some don’t believe they could ever be good enough for God no matter how hard they try. And we want to show them that’s simply not true.”

God loves his children for who they are; gay, straight, bi, or transgender, said Edmonds.

Arkansas Supreme Court: Anti-Gay Adoption Ban is Unconstitutional- Next On Deck Utah!?

Arkansas State Flag

Wait.. is that the sound of the sky falling Chicken Little??  I bet Huckabee is PISSED!  I guess Cindy Jacobs was wrong… Birds didn’t fall out of the Arkansas sky because of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, it was because Arkansas is going to allow adoptions by same-sex couples!

An interesting side note to this story is that the Arkansas Law very closely mimicks the Utah Adoption Law.  Lets hope that opponents in Arkansas appeal to a Federal court so Utah’s bigoted discriminatory law can be struck down as well!

[On April 7th] the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that Act I, the state’s ban on adoptions by unmarried couples, is unconstitutional.  Approved by voters in 2008, Act I prohibited adoption and foster parenting by unmarried individuals cohabiting with a sexual partner.  This banned adoption or foster care by any unmarried couple, regardless of sexual orientation.

The lawsuit was filed in 2008 by 29 adult and child plaintiffs who were harmed by the ban and were represented by the American Civil Liberties Union.  Today’s decision affirms an April ruling by a lower court judge that the adoption ban intruded on privacy rights guaranteed by the Arkansas Constitution.

Paul Mero- Mormons Shouldn’t Join ACLU Because Religious Freedom is Un-Mormon

Paul Mero

Recently the President of the University of Utah recommended that all LDS (Mormon’s to the rest of the world) belong to the ACLU.  Paul Mero of the Sutherland Institute (an independent but morally affiliated arm of the Mormon Church and generally anti-gay bigot) in typical anti-American family and anti-religious expression (unless it’s Mormon doctrine) thinks it’s crazy that Mormon’s would support an organization designed to support civil liberties.  His reason?  Because… as he says, often times the ACLU and the Mormons are on opposite ends of the aisle.  Perhaps that’s because the Mormon’s need to move across the aisle, recognize that not everyone needs to think like a Mormon and there are legitimate rights for those who don’t want their own planet when they die.

Utah Mormon Rep. Jason Chaffetz, known for taking stances like removing all illegal aliens, building a border fence, overturning women’s rights (Roe VS Wade), repealing all gun control laws and of course, lobbying against gay marriage (calling on black citizens of Washington DC to vote against the measure) and never missing a photo shoot or interview to propogate his anti-modern family, xenophobic, these colors don’t run has affirmed his admiration of the prince of anti-American values Glenn Beck.  When asked about his ‘dude, if the Prophet would let me be gay, I’d totally do you’ affiliation with Beck, Chaffetz responded:

“I’m honored,” Chaffetz said. “I have the greatest respect for Glenn Beck. I think he’s a true patriot and somebody I admire and enjoy interacting with.”

“He’s passionate and fired up about what he believes in,” Chaffetz said about the syndicated radio host and Fox News personality. “He’s driven by principle, and I think a lot of people are impressed by that — I am. He stands up for what’s right.

via Rep. Jason Chaffetz embraces Glenn Beck | Deseret News.

I’m not sure what terrifies me more, the fact that Chaffetz aligned himself with such an anti-modern family media whore or that he seems to believe that the married three times (because he was busted cheating on each of them) Beck has principles!  And yet the blind sheep voters of Utah continue to elect him….
