Southern Equalities "We Do" Campaign

Southern Equality launched The WE DO Campaign in Asheville, NC from October 3rd through the 14th.  Same-Sex couples requested marriage licenses daily throughout the campaign to raise awareness and call for full equality under North Carolina law for LGBT people.

Raising awareness in North Carolina is critical when this state is considering a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.  The group isn’t stopping with rights in North Carolina though.  They’re calling on the federal government to extend equal rights to all citizens in every state.  These acts are inspirational.  These acts are courageous.  These acts should be viral across our country!

Posted below is a heartbreaking video of committed loving couples asking and being rejected the right to marry.  Especially powerful for me were two women who upon rejection of their license asked:

“We’ve been together for 25 years… We’re in our mid 60′s.  Can you tell us what steps we might take to become full and equal citizens under the law… before we die?

Aussie Rugger David Pocock Stands Up for SSM Marriage

David Pocock

Australian rugby star David Pocock has a real sense of justice, supporting equal right and the fair trade movement. He’s also passionate about the rights of gays to marry, so much so that he and his partner, Emma, won’t legally marry until gays Down Under can. In a profile in the New Zealand Herald, Pocock said:

“Being brought up in a Christian home and still identifying as Christian, I get pretty annoyed with the Christian lobbies around the world who say gay marriage destroys the family and all that kind of rubbish.

“They claim to follow someone who always stood up for the oppressed and marginalized.

“I guess it is a fear of the unknown – if you talk to someone who doesn’t like gay people you can almost guarantee that they don’t know too many.

“These are the prejudices that you have to challenge and break down. Emma and I decided not to get legally married until our gay friends could do the same.”

God Heats Up Mid-America to Punish the LGBT Hating Tea Party, Christian Extremists and Their Supporters!

Perhaps all this time the Republican Tea Party and their right-wing Religious Christian Zealots are right.  God is unhappy with America and what’s going on this country and he’s getting his revenge.

Perhaps he’s exacting revenge on the religious extremists and their supporters for discriminating against God’s LGBT Children and denying them full marriage and human rights equalities.

Since conservative ‘traditional’ family Christian groups started attacking LGBT rights in the midwest, the temperature in those states has been going up!  Across the midsection of the country they spew their bigoted words of hate at God’s LGBT children, oust the fair-minded justices in Iowa,  lewdly use God’s name for political gain in Texas, Exodus International’s Bigot Conference in Minnesota this July and the fag hating Westboro Baptist Church use God’s name to hate his children; the heat in the Midwest and central South has done nothing but go up!

God has turned up the heat!  I surmise that God is PISSED at these conservative Tea Party/Christian Extremists and  he is smoking them out to extinguish these bigots who claim to hide under God’s wing!

Perhaps if the likes of NOM, AFA, AFTAH, Rick Perry, and all the other LGBT hating bigots got together in Texas and prayed to God for forgiveness on how they’ve mistreated, discriminated against, lied about, and forced LGBT’s into second-class citizenship, the Lord would find it in his heart to provide rain and temperature relief to these areas of the country… Perhaps!

The Facts Don’t Lie!

National Weather Service:  “The stage is being set for a massive heat wave to develop into next week as a large area of high pressure is anticipated to circulate hot and humid air over much of the central and eastern U.S. Maximum heat index values of at least 100°F are likely across much of this area by the middle of next week, with heat index values in excess of 110°F possible over portions of these areas.”

Extremist climate science deniers like Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty are campaigning tirelessly to give their state the climate of Texas.  That is what would happen if the nation and the world continues to follow in their preferred path of doing absolutely nothing to reduce emissions of planet-warming  greenhouse gases.

I know it is just a coincidence, but Minnesota is going to get a taste over the next several days of a Tea Party future (as will much of the rest of the country).  CNN reports today:

Extreme heat indices — how the air feels, with heat and humidity — are expected to reach up to 116 degrees in Minneapolis next week.

“These are extreme out-of-the-ordinary temperatures for Minnesota,” CNN meteorologist Sean Morris said.

Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and other areas in Texas experienced afternoon heat indices of 105 degrees or more through Thursday.

The month of June was the hottest recorded for Texas since 1895, according to the National Weather Service.

Justice Dept Won’t Fight Joint Bankruptcy for Same-Sex Marriage Bankruptcy

(San Francisco) Federal officials no longer plan to contest joint bankruptcy pleadings brought by legally married same-sex couples, a Department of Justice spokeswoman said Friday.

The Obama administration’s recent position is that the federal law forbidding government recognition of same-sex unions is unconstitutional. Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler said government lawyers decided this week that letting gay and lesbian couples jointly petition for bankruptcy protection is consistent with that stance.

“The Department of Justice has informed bankruptcy courts that it will no longer seek dismissal of bankruptcy petitions filed jointly by same-sex debtors who are married under state law,” Schmaler said.

The shift stems from a case involving two California men who got married when it was briefly legal in 2008 before the state’s voters passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.

Santorum and Bachmann Sign Anti-Gay, Anti-Porn, Pro-Slavery Vow

Republican presidential contenders Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have lined up behind a new pledge focused on social issues put forth by Bob Vander Plaats, a former candidate for governor who now reigns as a conservative kingmaker in the Hawkeye State. Vander Plaats heads the Iowa-based Family Leader, a conservative group. Signing “The Marriage Vow — A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family” is a requirement for earning the organization’s endorsement. Standing behind the pledge entails supporting a “federal Marriage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which protects the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman.” Among other things, it also means backing a ban on pornography.”

It’s virtually impossible to add any commentary here, when their bigoted actions speak for themselves.

God save America from the likes of Bachmann, Santorum and Vander Plaats.

New Facebook Group Takes Aim at Exposing NOM: The NOM Files

Brian Brown of NOM

Brian Brown of Hate Group NOM

The National Organization for Marriage, an allegedly Christian organization which has a top 10 spot on SPLC’s Hate Group watch list has recently pledged $2 million dollars to oust NY legislators responsible for getting Gay Marriage passed.  In the past they’ve taken credit for helping remove Iowa justices who protected LGBT marriage in that state.  In addition they’re mounting fights against marriage equality in states like New Hampshire, Maine, New York and Minnesota among others.

One of my favorite bloggers and South Carolina citizen Alvin McEwen of ‘Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters‘ has introduce a fantastic new Facebook group dedicated to exposing the enormous number of underhanded, anti-Christian, anti-Modern family and anti-gay tactics NOM uses on a regular basis.

This is a great way for one-stop shopping to learn more about and exposing an anti-American hate group like the National Organization for Marriage.

I encourage everyone to sign-up and share as much as you can about this organization which is a credible threat to Human and Civil rights in America…

The NOM Files is a new facebook group dedicated to shedding a light on NOM’s activities. Every distortion of the group will be trotted out, every lie will be remembered, and every time NOM tries to hide its donors, it will be given front page coverage.

The rules for The NOM Files are simple. Anyone can join and anyone can post. But I reserve the right to edit posts – which I will only do if the posts don’t fit the mission of the facebook group.

NOM has a lot to answer for. But until the lgbtq community and our allies make it a point to demand these answers, then we’re aren’t going to get them.

Rush on the Importance of Marriage to Liberals (Because it’s Not important to Conservatives)

Rush Limbaugh implies that marriage has always been important to conservatives, but liberals who in the 60′s saw marriage as old fashioned have only taken up the cause for marriage since ‘the gays’ wanted to get married.

However, as a ‘leader’ of the conservative movement, Limbaugh has been married four times, busted for drug abuse and doctor shopping, and in 2006 busted again for smuggling prescription drugs back into the country.  Clearly the right wing conservatives don’t care about marriage or drug abuse.  In fact the only conservative values they favor are values that hold them above morality or the law.  Thank God the Liberals are carrying the torch of decency, equality and fairness.

See What the DOJ is Doing with DOMA

Lambda Legal announced that the Department of Justice has not only stopped defending the Defense of Marriage Act but actually argued in federal court that DOMA is unconstitutional in a case brought before the federal courts by Lambda Legal and Morrison & Foerster on behalf of Karen Golinski.  This is a landmark change in the Obama Administration’s DOJ.  For the first time they’re arguing that DOMA is unconstitutional and should not be upheld in discriminating against the rights of LGBT married couples.

(San Francisco, July 5, 2011)—On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a brief strongly arguing that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional in a case brought by Lambda Legal and Morrison & Foerster LLP on behalf of Karen Golinski, a lesbian federal court employee denied medical coverage for her wife, whom she married when same-sex couples could do so in California. The DOJ had previously announced they would no longer defend DOMA, but this is the first legal filing in the country in which they have fully argued to a court that DOMA is unconstitutional. They asked the federal court not to dismiss Golinski’s claim.

The law is still being defended by legal counsel hired by the leadership of the House of Representatives.

“DOMA is unconstitutional and there are no reasonable arguments left to defend it,” said Lambda Legal Staff Attorney Tara Borelli who is representing Golinski. “The government itself has now forcefully argued that the marriages of same-sex couples cannot be treated as different and inferior under the law, and that any laws that treat lesbian and gay people differently must be reviewed with heightened scrutiny and presumed to be unconstitutional. Lambda Legal has been arguing that for years—it’s great to have them on our side. The Department of Justice is living up to its name in seeking to uphold the constitutional guarantee of equality for lesbian and gay people.

The National Organization For Marriage (NOM), the leading anti-marriage equality organization in the United States, has always been a mystery. Maggie Gallagher, her name synonymous with NOM, herself has always been a mystery too, given her status as a leading “traditional marriage” supporter who has a very-hidden husband, who admits to having had a child out of wedlock, and has another child rumored to be gay himself. Now, with the defection of NOM’s grassroots and online messaging strategist, Louis Marinelli, we’re getting some insight into the mighty army that almost single-handedly has been able to — at least temporarily — keep equality at bay in several key battlegrounds. And we’re learning what we’ve been led to believe is a mighty army is an army of about a half-dozen people.
